Trip 2, Day 2, Leg 2

Trip Day - Friday, September 24th

0700-Up with early daylight. 60F/55F. (Please note, temps will always be listed inside first, outside second.)  Fired up the heater to warm the cabin, made coffee, and had a glass of OJ with meds.

0730-Morning Bible study and prayer time.

0828-Finished my study and some reading in "The Light and the Glory" by Peter Marshall and David Manuel, who pose the question, did God have a plan for America? The book attempts to demonstrate just that!  Temps 68F in, 56F out. Cloudy with NW breeze.

0900-Departed in light rain. No mishaps on departure! Decided to get while the getting was good since it looked like the weather could deteriorate further! Had to weave between numerous rocky shoals along the route. Wind and small swell coming down a long fetch pushed me along.  Wind was about 10-12 knots.  I observed one houseboat heading in to home port.

1000-Checked out Harbor Island East (R34), which had a very tricky narrow entrance with lots of rocks and shoals.  Unfortunately, it was occupied and a cabin was also located right across from the boat site, so I reversed course quickly and followed my track back out to safer waters.

I decided to head further down Lost Bay where I observed a fishing boat next to Lost Bay East boat site which was the next option.  The fisherman soon moved away, so I turned back to take a closer look at the site.  However, it was very shallow and weedy, so I decided to take a pass. This whole Bay is very shallow!

I moved further down the bay to the last boat site, Falls View (R12).  It was also a bit shallow and weedy with a tricky tie up, but I decided to tie up anyway. The shore rocks were covered with lichen and moss and slippery from the rain, which made tying up a bit more challenging! The leg today was 5.9 nm at an average speed of 4.2 knots.  On landing I left the bow door open hoping "Chubby" would jump ship on his own...before more murderous endeavors ensue!

Too Shady To Charge

1030-I was hungry but needed to put up the solar panels asap, in spite of clouds, and rain off and on. After examining the situation further, I decided not to mess with the main panels due to cloud cover and shade.

The sandwich bread was frozen so I had a cold drink while the bread thawed out.  Later I made chicken salad sandwiches accompanied by chips to hold me until dinner.

1231-67F in, 59F out.

1544-68F/60F. Napped for an hour or so.  Sun is out but it is late already! I have the 40w portable panel out trying to charge the backup solar battery by keeping it constantly aligned with the sun. Unfortunately, the main panels are shaded already.  Earlier I had thought about going out to anchor to optimize sun exposure for all the panels, but it was already getting late and not worth the effort.

I completed dishes (yesterday's and breakfast) later than usual because the day had not gone according to plan and I got so little sleep last night due to a chomping Chubby!  No sign of the Chubby so far today though.  I will go ashore, sit in the sun, and read for a while.

I screwed up and left my "shore bag" in the truck.  I just wasn't thinking! It is used every time I go ashore to carry food, drink, cameras, books, binoculars, reading glasses, etc., and gives me a free hand to carry the chair at the same time.  It got left behind in the rush of getting the boat launched. I'm always trying to reduce excess boxes and bags after loading and before launching, but I offloaded one too many this time!

1725-I sat on the hill ashore to read and took some pics.  My hands got cold in the breezy cool air, so I walked around to warm up my hands and adjusted the small solar panel. Now it is off to grill steak tenderloin, to be accompanied by mashed potatoes, hot roll, salad, and red wine.

1824-68F/57F.  Delicious steak dinner is finished and cleanup complete. Retrieved the small solar system from ashore.  I managed to recover about 50% of full charge for the 384 Wh system. This solar generator serves as a backup, and was also used to power the fridge/freezer on the drive up from Forest Lake. As a comparison, the main solar generator is 1700 Wh powered by two 120w panels.

It is time to retire to the aft deck to enjoy the quiet of the evening with an appropriate libation.

1932-I used my table top fire for a while, but went inside after it burned out, and it clouded over again.  63F/56F. I will listen to my audio book and go to sleep.  Chubby has not been seen...maybe I can sleep soundly tonight?
