Trip 1, Day 3, Leg 3

Trip Day: Thursday, July 29th

0530-Will move today instead of taking the planned layover. Too hot to kayak and hike to be enjoyable. Solar generator is down to 26%, which is alarming!  The freezer is killing the battery in this heat.

0738-Generator is now down to 25%! I need sun! Temps 68F in, 63F out. Windows and doors are closed.  It does cool nicely at night, thankfully!

0957-Arrived at Round Bear Island Boat Site. Nice sandy beach.  Traveled 6.5 nm and averaged 8.3 kts.

Had to pass up Feedom Boat Site because another houseboat was there.  There was also one in my first night's boat site at Long Slu.

Bear poop all over the place along the shore, one fresh, so bears are around the area!

Boat Site: Round Bear Island (K28)

1118-69F/75F.  Took some pics and videos, washed dishes, dumped water out of my kayak cover from the storm yesterday.  Generator is now up to 30%, need to get close to 100% if possible.

1230-Went for a hike out to the point, very pleasant breeze and mostly sunny.  Took some pics, and returned to have lunch.  Chicken salad sandwiches, chips, with white wine.  Very nice day.  Need more of these! 72F/80F (For future reference, the first temp is always in the cabin and second is outside)

1300-73F/81F

1340-75F/82F.  Chased a humongous houseboat away! They had full intentions of tying up in my spot, ignoring my presence. But I stood in front of where they were going to land and started quizzing them about what they were doing, since I was already on the site.  It was a bit intimidating given the size of the boat and a couple of persistent crew ready to carry the lines ashore arguing with me.  I stood my ground but was shaking in my boots.  Finally the captain came down from the top deck and talked with me and finally backed away. They tried to argue that more than one boat can be at each site.  Which is true if both agree to the arrangement, but I did not!  As they backed away one of the crew quipped "is that even a houseboat" pointing at my little boat.  The proverbial mine is bigger than yours!

I was shook up after they left.  The boat was as big as they come 60-75' long and two stories high! With the helm on the top deck.  Fortunately it did not get out of hand and I kept my cool.

They kicked and fussed and claimed they had been looking for a sight for over four hours and found nothing, which I doubted was really the case.  I gave them some tips on open sites I observed.  They never nicely asked, or I may have given them the site.  They simply forced their hand and tried to bully there way by the shear size of the vessel.

A great reason to avoid summer peak!  I am beginning to question my decision to come mid-season.

1530-79F/83F, sunny with a light breeze.

1630-80F/84F. still sunny with light breeze.  Dinner was grilled tenderloin, mashed potatoes, hot roll, salad, and red wine.  Will take a swim later and put on some clean clothes.

Went up earlier and tilted my solar panels on the roof to maximize the sun angle. Solar is now up to 57%.  Before sundown I would like to see 66%.

Debating a move tomorrow? This is a great site, but I've already had two big houseboats try to come in here, perhaps it was the night before check-in at Ebel's?  But, that means more boats coming out Friday, so does it make sense to stay?  I don't think it's worth the hassle.  I don't want any more of these aggressive encounters with house boaters that are used to having their own way.  But where to go? Maybe anchor?

2100- Listened to music, enjoyed the evening and finally calmed down.  Took some pics from my chair ashore enjoying some Baileys with chocolate covered almonds as dessert.  75F/68F.

Will listen to my audio book and hit the sack shortly.  I set up the outdoor camera on the bow to try to catch a bear snooping around during the night.  Generator made it to 70%!  I'm very happy with that.

Beautiful Evening!
